Emerging UK artist Iona Luke returns with her striking new single “Existential”, delivering a dramatic, introspective release that cements her as one of the most compelling new voices in alternative pop.
Blending raw emotional intensity with a theatrical, widescreen sound, “Existential” sees Iona confront the spiralling thoughts that come with identity, self-doubt, and creative pressure.
“In a madly oversaturated music space, figuring out where you stand and what you have to say is scary stuff,” Iona explains. “When I had to decide whether I’d be ‘Iona’ or ‘Iona Luke,’ I repeated my name in my head too many times and had the mini existential collapse we all get when a word suddenly looks a bit funny.
“This song is about identity, overthinking, and wondering if what you do actually matters. It was almost impossible to write… snapped a lot of pencils.”
With its swelling instrumentation and cathartic energy, “Existential” builds into a powerful release. It continues Iona’s run of increasingly ambitious singles, following the haunting storytelling of “Cowboy Boots,” the magnetic pull of “Violence,” and the introspective edge of “Voices On The TV.”
At just 23 years old, Iona Luke has already carved out a distinct artistic identity. Raised in Shepherd’s Bush on a soundtrack of Bob Dylan and The Cure, before discovering PJ Harvey, Patti Smith and Stevie Nicks, her music balances poetic lyricism with an unfiltered emotional core. Her sound carries the expansive appeal of Florence + The Machine, the intensity of PJ Harvey, and a dramatic flair reminiscent of Tori Amos, all while remaining unmistakably her own.
Her journey into music has been anything but linear. While studying English Literature at Cambridge University, where she explored the visceral power of music through academic research, she was simultaneously building her career as a songwriter, signing a publishing deal with B Unique and performing across the UK. Her early experiences ranged from singing with the Capital Children’s Choir to being personally recognised by Lana Del Rey, who shared a video of herself singing along to Iona’s voice online.
Over the past year, Iona has continued to build momentum, assembling a full live band and amassing over 2 million streams across her releases. With appearances including The Great Escape Festival and a growing reputation for captivating live performances, she is quickly establishing herself as a formidable new presence in the UK music landscape.
With “Existential,” Iona Luke steps further into her own world, defined by poetic introspection, emotional honesty, and a fearless willingness to question everything.
