Basciville, the Wexford-born brother duo of Cillian and Lorcan Byrne, return with their compelling new single “Your Own Head”, released November 13th via Faction Records, and featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Ailbhe Reddy.
A sweeping, windswept duet built on swirling guitar textures and quietly searing emotion, “Your Own Head” marks the first glimpse of Basciville’s upcoming second album, due in 2026. The band describe the track as its emotional blueprint, the song that fell out first and set the tone for everything that followed.
“Your Own Head" was the first song written from the batch of songs that would become the second album. One of those songs that falls out in one go and thematically ties everything together”, they said. “It laments the ways we compromise the self in the name of love, religion and society at large. It touches on the balance between some global moral duty, the pull to be present and keeping the self safe.”
Reddy’s vocal arrives like a lighthouse beam in the fog as she trades verses and harmonies with Basciville’s signature cinematic intensity. With shades of REM, Jeff Buckley, The Frames, and contemporaries like Gang of Youths, Big Thief or Tamino, “Your Own Head” is folk-rock laced with existential ache, stitched together by deft songwriting and evocative performance.
Speaking about the collaboration, Ailbhe explains “I’ve been friends with the guys from Basciville for years and we’ve always talked about collaborating more. The first time I ever set foot in a real studio was with them, and it was such a joy and full circle moment to work on this song together. We recorded the vocals one sunny day in the Wexford opera house and I fell in love with the track so quickly. The lyrics are beautiful and so different from what I’d write for myself which is always exciting.”
Equal parts band and production duo, Basciville have spent the past few years as quiet powerhouses in the Irish music scene, working as collaborators, writers and producers with names including Susan O’Neill, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, The Ocelots, and Ailbhe Reddy herself. Their own output to date includes the EPs ‘Blues in Red’ and ‘For All Lost Youth’, as well as their acclaimed debut album ‘Hymns to the Air’.
Known for blending folk, art rock, orchestral swells, and lyrical introspection, their sound moves between sparse minimalism and expansive arrangements, always led by a desire to soundtrack both the personal and political unrest of modern life.
Their upcoming second album, written in the wake of socio-political disillusionment and spiritual fatigue, explores the dissolution of ideals, the friction between vulnerability and survival, and the quiet rebellions that begin inside your own mind.
