Galway garage-punk trio Shark School return with their devastating new single “5AM”, a furious and emotionally raw release that further cements the band as one of the most uncompromising new voices emerging from Ireland right now.
Much like their recent material, “5AM” pushes deeper into the emotional and political unrest that runs through the band’s forthcoming debut album Selachimorpha, due June 26th.
Driven by tense percussion, jagged guitars and a suffocating atmosphere that feels permanently on edge, “5AM” channels rage, exhaustion and grief into something deeply visceral. The track confronts the lasting trauma of assault and the systemic failures surrounding it, refusing to soften its message or dilute its anger.
“5AM is a visceral account of the suffocating feelings associated with assault; the loss of hope and aspiration in victims as abusers continue to thrive,” the band explain. “The track calls out the hypocrisy and audacity in calling Ireland a feminist nation while such issues continue to prevail.”
Following previous single “Don’t Trust A Man”, the new release continues Shark School’s refusal to shy away from uncomfortable truths. Where earlier material balanced sarcasm and chaos with biting humour, “5AM” leans into something darker and more emotionally crushing, exposing the vulnerability beneath the band’s confrontational exterior.
Formed in Galway in 2023 by Nora Staunton (guitar/vocals), Peggy Ford (bass) and Meg Bruce (drums), Shark School have rapidly become one of the most talked-about underground bands in Ireland. Their sound collides garage punk, riotous indie rock and abrasive noise into something that feels simultaneously cathartic and chaotic; often compared to the collision of Wet Leg and Nirvana raised on Catholic guilt and feminist fury.
Their debut album ‘Selachimorpha’ promises to be a blistering statement from a band entirely uninterested in restraint. Furious, exhausted and defiantly alive, the record explores emotional collapse, gender politics, identity and inner turmoil with sharp wit and unrelenting honesty.
Already celebrated for their explosive live shows, Shark School have built a fiercely loyal following through relentless touring and standout festival appearances. They’ve shared stages with acts including NewDad and The Love Buzz, while performances at Electric Picnic, All Together Now and sold-out hometown shows at Róisín Dubh have established them as one of Ireland’s most thrilling live propositions.
The band are set to continue their rapid rise with a run of UK and European live dates this summer.
