Following a string of sold-out London shows and growing anticipation for her debut EP, Madeleine Rose Witney returns with her stunning new single “Shine”, out 4th September on 5dB Records. A luminous, late-night lullaby laced with darker truths, “Shine” is a track that feels both timely and timeless.
Deceptively dreamy in its delivery, “Shine” carries a deeper weight under the surface. Witney envisions a woman walking home alone at night, wrapped in vulnerability and defiance, watched over by a celestial chorus. With a lyricism that blends the mythic and the mundane, it’s a haunting ode to female resilience and a call to reclaim safety and power in a world that rarely offers it freely.
Speaking about the new release, she said, “‘Shine’ by design is an anthem for particularly women but anyone who may be vulnerable in that situation, day or night, to have a kind of angelic figure guiding them home but tragically the fact is it’s not safe to walk alone with headphones in because you have to have your wits about you. It’s set to a “jolly” tune with intentional juxtaposition. I’m the kind of person who listens to lyrics deeply but I know not everyone is, so I like the idea of the intention maybe passing some people by but when hearing “can this fist full of keys save you on this balmy eve” if you know, you know. Maybe this will provoke some introspective thoughts for those of them who need it and hopefully I’ll be able to sing about rainbows soon.”
With comparisons drawn to Jessica Pratt, Weyes Blood, Natalie Prass, Aldous Harding, and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Madeleine Rose Witney is carving out a world entirely her own, one where retro glamour, West End shadows, and raw emotion converge in high drama.

A self-described torch singer for the modern age, Madeleine Rose Witney makes music that flickers between Soho showbiz and seedy noir. Raised in Kentish Town and schooled in the subterranean nightlife of old London, her storytelling is vivid, cinematic, and steeped in contradiction. Her upcoming debut EP draws from the neon-drenched melancholy of forgotten bars, eccentric strangers, and the loneliness that sometimes comes with being a woman who dares to take up space.
Inspired by the glitz and grit of Soho’s underground and driven by instinct over formal training, Witney’s voice carries a richness and maturity far beyond her years, a sonic heir to the likes of Julie London and Karen Dalton, yet rooted firmly in the present.
