Ocean Turns Heartache into Timeless, Relatable Art on “Jealous”
“Jealous” marks the third and most emotionally charged installment in Ocean Tisdall’s breakup series. “Jealous” is a song that captures heartbreak in its rawest, most human form. If “Making It Easy” was about letting go with grace, “Jealous” is about what comes after: the quiet torment of seeing someone you love move on.
Evoking the classic ache of Adele’s “Someone Like You” and the poignancy of Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved”, Ocean delivers a gallant, tenderly stripped-back performance on “Jealous” which is both intimate and emotionally charged.
With piercing lyrics and a soaring, honest delivery, the track lays bare the universal pain of loving someone enough to let them go, even when every part of you still wishes they’d stayed.
Speaking of the track Ocean says:
‘‘I wrote Jealous in April this year up in Edinburgh with my friend and producer, Prentice. The song is about watching someone move on so easily after heartbreak - as if what you had meant nothing - while you’re left completely paralysed. It’s that feeling of seeing them eating, sleeping, and going out like normal, while you can’t even function, and realising how unaffected they are compared to you.
Jealous explores that uncomfortable emotion that most of us don’t like to admit feeling. We’re often taught that jealousy is ugly - that it makes us seem bitter or small - so instead of understanding it, we tend to push it away or hate ourselves for feeling it. But really, jealousy often just points to an unfulfilled need in your own life that someone else has managed to meet in theirs. After writing the song, I realised that jealousy fades once you start recognising your own worth, rebuilding your self-esteem, and Realising your value isn’t determined by someone else’s affection or attention
My favourite lyric in the song is: “I was a dog on a leash, you know I would’ve stayed, stayed sat on your grave.”
When I was in Edinburgh, I learned about the story of Greyfriars Bobby - a dog who, after his owner John Gray’s sudden death, sat by his grave every single day for 14 years until his own death. That story really stayed with me. It made me realise how much love and loyalty I’d been holding onto, even when it wasn’t being returned. I was like that dog - lost, waiting, holding on long after I should’ve let go. It captured how heartbreak can feel like mourning, like losing a piece of yourself - and how sometimes, even when someone leaves, you don’t mentally or emotionally leave with them.’’
This third chapter cements Ocean as one of alt-pop’s most affecting storytellers, blending emotional depth, textured vocals and a rare kind of sincerity that lingers long after the last note fades.
