Following the release of their much-loved EP ‘Eternity’ earlier this year, Lucia & the Best Boys are back to showcase their next collection ‘The State Of Things’ with new offering ‘Perfectly Untrue’.
With the EP’s initial single ‘Let Go’ dropping back in May, which was recorded in LA alongside Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet after the band met him at a party after SXSW a few years ago, ‘Perfectly Untrue’ sees the band return with a more sweeping, alt-pop laden direction. With frontwoman Lucia Fairfull offering up more of those bold and passionate vocals throughout their latest single, their newest release shows them explore more atmospheric tones, moving away from the gritty and grizzled sound of their earlier work.
Speaking about the new single, Lucia said, "Perfectly Untrue was written a couple of weeks after I wrote ‘Let Go’. This recording is in its original form, which Chris Greatti and myself powered on an all nighter till 4am, as I was leaving LA the next day. It’s funny to listen to them both back to back as it shows the many mixed emotions I was going through during heart-break, feeling strong and capable one minute, then distraught and confused the next. The only way through seemed to be to pretend that everything was fine or perfect whereas in reality it was Perfectly Untrue. I can definitely say now looking back that this is the worst solution ever, but also I know that it is just a coping mechanism that people use as escapism. When you are in a weird or dark headspace you see many versions of yourself that you didn’t even know existed. Perfectly Untrue’s "Happy Go Lucky" sound portrays the fake joy I pushed myself to feel in order to avoid the sad truth, which is displayed in the lyrics that are also coated in glitter and glamour - “dressed up in gold” and “dance until I die”.
Their new four-track EP ‘The State Of Things’ will be released on October 9th through Sweet Jane Recordings and will feature two more brand new tracks. At the start of 2020 - the year not to be forgotten - Lucia & the Best Boys released their ‘Eternity EP’. Recorded in LA with producer Carlos De La Garza (Paramore, Wolf Alice, Best Coast), the ‘Eternity EP’ saw Lucia and the Best Boys (formerly LUCIA) dive headfirst into their 80s inspirations – acts like Madonna, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Stevie Nicks, New Order and Human League – while also retaining the fierceness of their 90s grunge, Courtney Love-esque bent. “It’s more aggressive than you would think, when you think of 80s music,” explains Lucia, of the sound on the Eternity EP.
‘Eternity EP’ features; lead single ‘City Of Angels’ - a tour de force that focuses on isolation and the trappings of society, live favourite ‘Flames’ and ‘My God,’ as well as their punchy previous single ‘Good Girls Do Bad Things’ (the accompanying video, directed by Stuart Alexander, sees Lucia ride a horse around the Barrowlands area of Glasgow, as you do!). The equally eye-catching video for ‘City Of Angels’, also directed by Alexander sees front woman Lucia Fairfull raw and up-close as she grapples with her inner demons.
